Here at Torbay Chiropractic Clinic, we know how hard Mums work, especially when it comes juggling work and looking after the kids. BUT they don’t always look themselves and their backs very well.
The British Chiropractic Association has released results of a survey which showed nearly half of mums (and dads) 43 per cent, who have ever suffered from back or neck pain, found their pain increased after having children.
New mothers were particularly affected, with over twice as many women (57 per cent) suffering fresh aches and pains since becoming a parent, as men (27%).
And, quite surprisingly, the British Chiropractic Association found that many people were unaware that becoming a parent could trigger back or neck pain.
Over two thirds (68%) of parents revealed they did not receive any guidance for looking after their back after having their child! Astounding!
Picking up children and even playing with them, can cause quite a strain to your back. Whether young or older, mums have been through a lot, so we thought we would put together a little guide to help mums look after themselves just a little bit better.
Hold closely. When carrying you baby or child, hold them as close as you can to your centre of gravity. Try carriers or slings to help too.
Play time! It’s advisable to get down to the same height as you child when playing – it’s much better (and more comfortable) than bending!
Pushchair posture. Look for a pushchair with adjustable height settings if possible so it can be moved to suit your own height. When pushing the pram or pushchair, you should be able to walk upright with a straight spine and hands resting at a comfortable height
Spread the weight. Parents of babies and children inevitably carry heavy bags! Using a rucksack style bag is best as you can spread the weight evenly across your back. Check the straps are tightened so that the load is held against your back – Check out our rucksack blog for more details of how to carry your bag properly.
Bend bend bend, from your knees! Tidying up after your little ones is a daily routine, just remember to bend from your knees. Take a leaf out of your child’s book – watch them. You’ll see they naturally use the squatting position to pick things up!
Night night. Make sure that when your baby’s cot or child’s bed is in place there is plenty of room for you to access it without needing to twist or strain.
And finally, as you child gets older, encourage then to do more for themselves, not only will this develop their confidence, but also ease the strain on your back, picking up ever growing children can put a huge strain on your back.

The BCA recommends that, if you are experiencing pain for more than a few days, then you should seek professional help, as an undiagnosed problem could lead to longer-term problems if left untreated.
